Website Optimisation ! Is it necessary?  Can we be listed in the first page of major search engines without website optimisation?

 

Why do we need Google optimisation, Is it necessary? Without the website optimisation do we have any chance to be listed in the high positions? These are the major questions coming from the different industry based clients, everybody's concern is same, there are millions of companies out there but in the first page there is only 10 results, who are these 10 websites, why are they in the first page and my website is not.
